Learn how to determine the declared value of your FedEx packages and how to input the value with the EasyPost API.
FedEx Declared Value
For insurance purposes, FedEx refers to the insured value of the package as the FedEx “declared value.” For shipments without a declared value, FedEx’s maximum liability is $100 for damages or losses at no cost. It's important to remember that the FedEx declared value is not insurance. Rather, the declared value represents the maximum liability for which FedEx will accept in connection with your shipment.
To use the FedEx declared value option within the EasyPost API, you will need to set the
carrier_insurance_amount which maps to the FedEx name "totalDeclaredValue.amount". The currency should also be included so that FedEx understands which currency the insured value is listed in. For example, to set up the declared value of a package as $100, with a currency in USD for a FedEx package, you would use the following JSON example:
Note that you can also obtain insurance from EasyPost outside of the FedEx insurance options. EasyPost offers 100% coverage of your package for just 1% of the FedEx package value. Our Insurance API is easy to set up and can be automated to apply insurance to all (or certain) packages you send.
